Wow. That excerpt was wonderful. The writing was masterful, and the characters were believable and fascinating. You got me to care about them, to root for them, in only 17 pages! (I love the concept of a castle empty of servants, by the way; it's such a unique idea.) You pulled me in completely, Elly, and I'm not even a fan of this genre. (To be honest, I usually run screaming the other way.) I can't believe that you can't find a publisher for this! WTF?
Emily, I am so honored by your compliment. Thank you so much! I never fancied myself a genre writer, and I never thought of TWMD as a genre novel--until the awful query process forced me to force it into a box. I don't really read "genre fiction" either, outside of classic sci-fi ala Bradbury and Asimov.
It is my hope that you find that the rest of the book transcends genre into something a bit more universal, in the way that fairy tales are. That's my humble goal anyway... :)
